The project aims to gather traditional knowledge from the Itä-Lapin region about hunting, fishing, and other natural resources from older generations who still possess this wisdom and storytelling tradition. The collected material will be compiled into a guidebook for preparing traditional foods. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Lapin Martat (Finnish home economics association). It aims to inspire young people to engage with traditional foods derived from hunting, fishing, and natural resources, as well as encourage the comprehensive utilization of the obtained harvest through various workshops. Visibility will be enhanced through social media and by collaborating with influencers who appeal to the target audience. The project will also collaborate with local food entrepreneurs to offer more locally representative food to tourists. During the project period, the feasibility of organizing a new traditional food event in the region during the autumn will be explored.

Project Duration: April 1, 2024 – May 30, 2026

The project is managed by Itä-Lapin kuntayhtymä (the Local Federation of East Lapland) and funded by Lapin ELY-keskus (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Lapland) with 9 % support from the European agricultural fund for rural development. The project budget is €269,131.80.
